The Position :
This role is essentially a new one and is being created to ensure that the scientific expertise currently enjoyed by ITM Power continues and develops into the foreseeable future. They have an opportunity for a Principal Scientist to join their team and to consolidate and grow their knowledge base for the foreseeable future.
The main duties of the position will include :-
*The provision of support to the Head of the Science Group, specifically in improving current materials, researching and developing new materials and processes, and conceiving and suggesting possible applications for the results. This is mainly centred around ionically active hydrophilic materials and catalyst interactions concerning power energy storage requirements for hydrocarbon synthesis by electromechanical means. The group includes scientists working with photovoltaics, current materials (acid materials), alkaline materials, electrode assemblies and application development.
*There will be scope to lead small, multi-disciplined teams.
*Assisting with the definition of basic research and development pursuant to the development of materials, production methods and applications of both existing and future products
*To motivate, encourage, lead, mentor and ensure discipline of the science group
Over time, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to become ITM Power's subject matter expert for scientific related issues. As such, some fairly specific criteria are required for this role. This includes :-
*Degree and post-graduate qualification in Physics, Materials Physics or Electro-Chemistry. A PhD is very much preferred. Candidates with Materials Physics backgrounds should be with soft materials as opposed to crystal materials
*Extensive experience in scientific research and development
*Extensive experience of man management (although the key driver is very much on the technical side) with the ability to coach, mentor, encourage and motivate a multi-skilled research group
*A visionary, able to conceive potential applications of new and emerging technologies, products and processes, prove their viability and ultimately to create new marketable, saleable products
*Experience of working in a commercial research and development organisation ; although government, public or academic experience will certainly be beneficial, it is essential that you are also able to grasp the commercial aspects of research and understand the value of both time and money. Candidates with experience of working in either a consultancy or self employed environment are especially welcome.
The successful applicant will be both working in and leading a small project and R & D based team and as such will require excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Salary is negotiable according to experience is likely to range from £35,000 to £50,000, with 33 days holiday and a contributory pension plan. Relocation assistance is available for candidates who do not currently live in the South Yorkshire area, although applications will only be accepted from people who already have the unrestricted right to live and work in the UK.
